God is a DJ

Admittedly, when the bands finish playing we will breath a sigh of relief! Hopefully, because it all ran smoothly, and there were no hiccups...
This is when the DJ's start.. And they've been a much easier job to organise; Im sure my sound engineer will agree.
Im extremely happy with the end of 'FESTIVAL' line up! We have the Audio Sculptors playing; the team of dj's who Reuben recently watched support The Scratch Perverts! We also have Drum and Bass MC Impact, a local talent from Gloucester. He also comes with a dj. And very recently confirmed we have Kandifunk.... I heard them play on a night out in Swindon last week, and was taken aback by their performance.. Funky beats with added percussion. Excellent dance music, upbeat and inkeeping with merry festival spirit.
Of course, 'local celebrity' muchly appreciated by most of the student community, Reuben himself will be performing an end of night set. Of course.. As usual this depends on how drunk he gets. A risk we're prepared to take.

And so they came... alone, nothing but love and an instrument..

This just forces me to express my undying love to all you musicians out there.. Who made you all so god damn giving! Thank you.... Once again. This could not have been done without your help. Much appreciation to everyone mentioned in this post.

The line up of acoustic acts is fab.. All perfected performers who are well known locally, many of them have them have been grown afar though, and have found base here during university. So it wont all be rehearsed in a Gloucestershire accent. 'oh arhh!'

Do you all know Joe Summers? He's fab. Plays all over Cheltenham and during his sets you never see a frown in the room. Well, unless hes playing his sad songs. Then we all frown for effect. Ruth Bewsey's voice can be descibed as angelic, and Im very happy to be putting a female act in the line up!! (Come on girls surely more of you can sing!!) Shes wonderful. Alike Joe she plays all over. They both perform in Slaks, the Bongo bar at Subtone and in the Swan. Look them up. They always puts on a good show and know how to get a crowd going..

There will also be live sets from John Madden (who has been an asset to my festival organising team, thank you John :) and Tom Mitchell, Christian Walsh, Adam de Silva, Richard Partington and Xenia on the ucalalie, this is a small guitar (not a banjo!)

In the VIP room, there will only be background music... For those of us who may need a break. In the VIP room.. Thanks to Anna (freelance press officer and creative writing lecturer) There will be some performance poets and poetry readings. Something a little different I hope. Always brilliant to listen to a well written poem. This will also be a little more chilled out.

In true festival spirit...

You've heard the confirmed band line up so far... 'So far.' There will be more. Much more. Dont want to get you all excited until they confirm. Thats understandable right?

This is a festival. Its just too cold to hold it outside. Too cold and far too complicated. One day I will aquire a technical head and will learn how to create a real festival. The type where we lavish the smells of each others body odour and forget about the pattern of sleep (which is apparently neccessary!) This is a warm festival, with clean people... Its a strange concept.

So, I have looked up to the gods... Michael Eavis included, and have decided we need more than just a line up of bands. We needs acoustic acts, pianists, poets, performance artists, DJ's and MC's. We need to rock our way through the night and dance our way into the early hours. In true festival spirit we need variety, originality and just plain wierdness....

So I called a few numbers... Bowed down to a few local heroes and, have now; Thanks once again to the generous contributions of many artists, got an amzing line up ofalternative acts.

Thy shall not forget the music...

Yea, ok so I've done the rant! I'll get onto the music.
I'd firstly like to say.. Thank you to everyone that replied to the facebook group. I f**kig love musicians!! The response was massive and so many people have been prepared to go OUT of their way for absolutely nothing (but maybe a big hug from me and Reuben at the end).

The night could not go on without the music. So once again thank you!

Anyway, so far we have definetly playing:
The Fen Tigers (A band from waaaay down south!! Barnstaple, Devon... The band consists of Joe Hatt, Tom Ling, Tony Williamson, and Sam Tabberner)Are they successful? Yes! Only last years winners of battle of the bands. First caught my eye after they played an outstanding set to the vast crowds at the popular university ball. Very much looking forward to these guys, they project massive amounts of energy on the stage!

Computerclub To be honest I got a little over excited to have these guys on board. I love them. NME loved them.... What more can I say!?
They have been compared to the Editors and interpol.. Although I dont think this comparison does their unique sound justice. They've just released the album 'Before the walls came down' and it was rated 7/10 in NME. Not bad boys... Cheltenham awaits your presence!

Free Range A three piece funk rock band from the local area. Brilliant.
... Its funky, and the guys seem like they're going to be good fun. After watching their videos I knew immediately that these guys could entertain a crowd...

Velkrobomb I cant quite put my finger on what genre of music these guys play.. Its face paced, and has influences of metal, indie rock, grunge and punk. Fun and catchy vocals, a dancable beat and yea... they're pretty funking awesome. And definetly unique.

Cleary Indie 'A mix of edgy razor sharpe guitar with original pop melodies and modern narrative lyrics.' A band local to Cheltenham... Although they have not been afraid to spread their wings. As headliners at the popular Essex festival 'MUNTFEST'. The boys rocked the stage.... Im sure they'll be rocking ours!!

Why raising the money is so important to us...

Cambodia was a real eye opener; it was definitely the poorest country I have ever visited, and it really made me aware of how lucky we are. (This sounds incredibly cheesy, I know!) Me, Reuben and our friend Steph spent a month working in an orphanage.. We were only meant to stay there for a week but we became far too attached to the children and projects that we had started with them. So our visa to Laos was binned and we were all extremely happy with our decision to stay.

The orphanage was called the NCCLA... The New Cambodian Children's Life Assosiation. When I imagined visiting an orphanage (before I arrived) I had visions of cold floors and unhospitable environments.

But the NCCLA was not at all as I expected. Even after spending one day with the children I wanted to be part of their family. There was so much love. They all looked out for each other and the couple that started the project, and owned the buliding were incredible!

Neth and Lay the owners owned a restaurant in Phnom Penh and regularly welcomed begging street children (in their masses) into the restaurant, to provide them with a safe, loving environment. Even if it were only for a few moments until they were called back to work by their watchers! The couple decided that they wanted to take some of these street children in under their care and did what they could with very little resources...

The NCCLA has now grown and they house 28 children. All the children old enough to learn are provided with a bed (well, a floor!) clothes, shelter, food and most importantly love, safety and education.

Many of the children's parents died from disease such as AID's and landmines, and many of them simply could not afford to look after their children. On the streets of Cambodia, everyday there are children working as sex traffikers, shoe shine boys and book sellers, anything possible to make money for the person who has control of them. Families breed children, as we would animals in hope to use them for begging purposes to get money from tourists. A trade that us westerners are keeping alive.

Some of these children are extremely clever, and articulate. Their life experiences have toughened them and they appreciate any oppurtunity that they are given. The sad reality is that many of them will never be given a chance...

This is why helping the 28 children at the NCCLA is so important to us. These children have an oppurtunity to hopefully have a better quality of life. They are all in education and if finances are provided they can remain in school, with a safe home to return to.

But this may not be possible.......
Conflict on the border of Thailand and Cambodia has been preventing tourists from entering the country. As a consequence of this the restaraunt has not been doing so well... All the profits made in the restaraunt help run the orphanage.

This is why we must help now. The money we raise by holding THEMUSICBOXPROJECT on December 7th will help keep the orphanage running..

Please come along.
